Today was the last day! :/
I coordinated with Steven, 4CORE's photographer, to come into the office to take pictures of Ryan (4CORE's primary intern) for the HUB image, as well as drop off some pictures he had taken of Housing Solutions and Southwest Conservation Corps, which are now on 4CORE's Server. I worked more with putting parts of the HUB together for Teresa or future interns to finish. I finished the Board of Directors section of the image, and am almost done with Ryan's part now. Gregg had me do some little things for him this morning, like make labels for some files and continue working with graphs to get the information more organized. Teresa was in for the afternoon so we got to work together briefly. We did a wrap-up of my work here and some final paperwork.
We went over my objectives and to-do's that we had set up at the beginning of the internship and discussed which ones I had completed and which ones were not complete. Most of the to-do's had been to-done, but the main project I worked on, the HUB image, was not complete so I emailed Teresa some files that I had that she could maybe work off of in order to get some of the parts of the HUB done.
For the remainder of the afternoon I did some small little "projects" from fixing a thermo-cam Gregg had, to working with Bonnie, 4CORE's finance manager, to send out some W-9's to some of 4CORE's partners.
4CORE has been such an incredible experience and I will forever be grateful for my time here. Everyone here is so welcoming and I felt like for a short time I was part of the office! I didn't know what to expect before I started in on this internship but this is a really great program that AHS has, and I am so happy I got to have this opportunity. Continue to follow up with Four Corners Office for Resource Efficiency and their Energy to Evolve Blog.
On a side note: this is a really cool Power outlet I found~

Day 13: Wednesday, March 28th
Yesterday's photo shoot was a lot of fun! We got to go down to the junkyard that's slightly out of town and pose around old cars and buses. It took the majority of the afternoon, but was well worth it. Today was another long day due to the time I missed yesterday.
In the office I did a few small projects for Gregg such as creating a graph of Weatherized homes and audits that 4CORE predicts to complete, goals, and actual numbers. This will be filled out over the course of the next year and a half from 4CORE's Wx Crew. I handed off the work I had done with the new Home Rx forms to Gregg, which he is now taking to the next step and presenting to other staff on how to refine what I had done (in pencil, luckily) and change for the future. I also worked with Sandhya to see if any of 4CORE's fund donors had been "blacklisted" which would be pretty bad news for 4CORE's funding... As it turns out none of the local donors had been blacklisted, which is convenient.
I tried contacting 4CORE's photographer to see if he can drop off some pictures that I can use in the HUB image I need to put together, but he has not contacted me back, and I now am pretty sure that the HUB image will not be presented at the exhibition AHS is holding on Friday. Teresa was not in today but I mostly worked with Sandhya and Gregg to get a lot of work done. She will be in tomorrow, and we plan to do a quick wrap-up of my time here at 4CORE over the last 3 weeks! It is surprising how fast the time has gone by, and honestly I'm regretting having to go back to school and homework after having had this internship experience!
Steve Smith came into 4CORE today to pay me a visit, which I have been wondering when would happen. I very briefly talked to him about 4CORE, what I have learned here, as well as showed him some of the work I have been doing here. Tomorrow is going to fly by and I am sad that it will be my last day! But it has also been a wonderful experience, needless to say.

Day 12: Tuesday, March 27th
Today was a very short day. I had arranged my schedule with Teresa earlier this week so that I would be able to get a few hours off today in order to help Jerrica with her internship project. Jerrica is working with a photography studio downtown and wanted a few people to get their pictures taken, to which I happily accepted! We get our hair and makeup professionally done and go to a junkyard to take pictures... Since I am missing a few hours today though, I'm making those up on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. For the beginning of the day I worked mostly on the new Home Rx forms and filling those out to run by Gregg. I also checked in on the progress of the Transportation deliverable and to see when I will be getting the information I need from the surrounding regions' airports.
Tomorrow will be a longer day again, so I think I will be able to get more done, but I am also really excited for this afternoon's photoshoot!

Day 11: Monday, March 26th
Today I got the printed out copies of the new Home Rx forms and worked on inputting a lot of that information. I also cut out some 4CORE stickers that will be used in the main hall. Moving ahead with the transportation deliverable, I contacted the main airports in the 5 regions 4CORE covers, and am not awaiting stats from them. I did not progress with the HUB today, it also became clear to me that if I did want this to be my main project I would only be able to exhibit a picture of it since it is a permanent, large, metal board in the conference room here. Teresa uploaded my blog to the Energy to Evolve Blogsite today. Since it's Monday, the first half of the day consisted mostly of employee conferences still mostly regarding the large transition 4CORE is going through. I tried to think further about what my exhibition will include since the HUB image may not turn out as planned at this point. Since I did the graphics for the annual report, I can show those. I can also show a set of the new Home Rx forms vs the old ones. Along those lines I can show the old Step Up chart and the new one I created. I have also been using the small notebook Rachael gave us almost everyday, so I can show that which has all of my notes. Another thing to show would be the interview Teresa and I had last week. As far as a larger project though, I will try to show my plans for the HUB image, but as of now I don't think that our photographer will be able to get pictures for the board in time, and I can't move the HUB easily anyways....
Tomorrow I will continue inputting information to the Home Rx forms to present to Gregg, and work further with trying to contact the airports for numbers. Again, check out my blog on 4CORE's site!!

Day 10: Friday, March 23rd
Today I revised the Blog entry I was working on yesterday, and sent that to Teresa so she can upload the Blog onto the site. I also worked on coordinating my schedule with Teresa since I may work with Jerrica on her project on Monday, which would make me need to move around about three of my hours. Teresa and I moved forward with changing the Home Rx files, so we contacted Basin Printing so we can move forth with that soon. I also contacted 4CORE's photographer so that we can get close to finishing the HUB image, which at this point is about the same. Teresa uploaded my entry to the Energy to Evolve Blog that I did, and will put it on the website on Monday.

Day 9: Thursday, March 22nd
When Teresa originally met with me before starting the internship we created a list of "to-do's" that I would try to complete while doing my internship. One of those items on the agenda was to choose a blog topic and write a blog for 4CORE's blog: Energy to Evolve. For the blog I decided to focus on the hotel industry, especially in the United States, and the energy consumption that goes with that, how they can save money on utility bills by becoming more efficient, and which hotels are already moving in this direction. I took most of the morning to do some solo research on this, and compiled information to then put into a blog. Without Teresa here, I am unable to log into the Blogsite however, I can still type it up for it to be uploaded later. This blog is usually mandatory for 4CORE's interns, and is a good way to not only learn more about a certain area of interest, but also inform the public about this topic. Today was a really slow day in the office in that only three employees other than myself were in. Gregg and Bonnie are going out to Denver this afternoon to present the "GOVERNOR'S ENERGY OFFICE NONCOMPETITIVE REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS FOR EXISTING WEATHERIZATION SERVICE PROVIDERS." Sandhya and I put together a binder this morning with all of the proposals and documents compiled to be shown to state representatives. Tomorrow when I get my blog on Hotel efficiency and consumption uploaded I will also post it to my Daily Blog.

Day 8: Wednesday, March 21st
Today was one of the slower days in the office for me. Most of the desks in the first office are moved out, and the second office is not set up for me to be in yet. I used Gregg's old desk today to do most of my work. I finished up some more prep work on the HUB image- which I still consider to be one of my bigger projects, started making a movie out of some footage Heather shot, and looked into writing my blog entry for 4CORE. I didn't really work with anyone today, especially since Teresa was gone, but on my own it was pretty busy with just the work that I was doing. Tomorrow Teresa will be in and we will work together on getting more pictures for the HUB and also get the new Home Rx layouts that I can start working on for Gregg.

Day 7: Tuesday, March 20th
Today we continued with the transition state of the office, and spent all day moving things from one room into another 4CORE office (previously used primarily for weatherization) right next door. Everyone moved everything from desks and countless supplies to contents of refrigerators and plants to the next room, which was being setup in a way for everyone to somehow fit into this smaller office. After lunch Teresa and I did our interview that the LINK program had scheduled to be done by tomorrow. These were pretty much the two things that happened today. The interview I conducted with Teresa took about ten minutes, and is below:
Q: What did you study in college and how did that help you to be where you are today?
A: I majored in Environmental Science, with an emphasis on Marine Ecology, which doesn't really relate to what I do now, but it made me realize that Science isn't the answer. I think education is a better form of changing people's behaviors, and now I do that through marketing and outreach. There are obviously problems in the world that need to be addressed and we don't need to study those any more in my mind, they exist, and I realized that I can have more of an impact by doing educational activities rather than studying specialized research topics. That's how I came to be in educational outreach, although I still love science.
Q: Resource Efficiency isn't necessarily a well known occupation, how would you best describe 4CORE to someone who didn't know about it?
A: I always tell people that we help them save money on their utility bills! That money seems to speak to everybody, everyone speaks that language and that's how I often explain 4CORE. As a bonus, you save energy, you save potential pollution, are more efficient with your water use, and will also help future generations by conserving these resources. Not to mention, we decrease our dependance on foreign oils.
Q: I'm sure working in this field has its fair share of rough patches, especially as Program Manager, how do you overcome these challenges?
A: I think the most difficult thing to deal with is working with people who believe different things than we do, and that are very vocal about them. The best way to deal with them is to use that language that speaks to everybody: money. We talk about how this isn't just about saving the planet, or battling climate change, since a lot of people don't believe in climate change. We try to overcome these challenges by using a language that everyone can relate to. There are still people who don't believe in 4CORE existing as an organization, and there will always be people in the world who disagree so we just try to appeal to the mainstream people and inform them the best that we can.
Q: What time of year has 4CORE found to be busiest or slowest, and why do you think that is?
A: Summer is definitely our busiest season, and a big part of that is our Weatherization and that our people are able to get out and do more of that with the weather cooperating. There are also a lot of events in the past that we have attended in the summer, such as the county fair. As these public events start happening we get busier in the summer.
Q: (^) Does this ever pose a problem with your career as far as stress or challenges, especially in Durango's economy?
A: I'd say it goes up and down on a monthly basis anyway, it doesn't seem to affect me as much as it would affect the Weatherization crews for instance. Certainly as we have more events, it affects me, but we're also re-thinking our strategy and reaching out to the community. Obviously some of our other challenges as a non-profit organization, are funding. That has to do with how we need to diversify our funding with federal and state grants, local sponsors, and that is always stressful, and people get laid off when we don't make enough money!
Q: If you had the chance to take a different career path, would you? And what would it be?
A: When I first started college I was really interested in Architecture, and now I'm very interested in design in that form, but also landscapes design and agriculture. That doesn't have much to do with what I do now, but as far as agriculture goes, you produce food locally, you don't have to transport it and that generates money for our economy. I am also very interested in farming! That might even be my next career if I have one. Farming is a lot of hard work though, and it takes a lot of time which I can't afford to do right now, especially with Sonora! [Teresa's 8 1/2 month old baby]
Q: Since you've had Sonora, what has been the most difficult thing about keeping up with work and raising her? (Balance)
A:Well I work at home with her, and as she gets older and more engaged that gets hard since the only time I'm really good at working at home are when she's asleep or really focused on a task of her own, which isn't very often anymore. It's hard because I want to be a good mom and be good at my job and to be able to do both of those things makes you not as good as you could be at either of them. Another thing is that I can't afford to do anything else now, so it's sometimes hard to find that balance. It's definitely a challenge.
Q: Who has impacted you the most in your life? And how did they influence you?
A: I'd say my mother was my biggest influence to me. She was a single mom of three girls and managed to get her master's degree while raising us, working full time, and putting us all through school. She is currently a freelance grant writer and used to work up at Colorado State University as a director of a program there. She worked really hard and also taught me a lot. I feel that I am like her in that I am a writer. She inspired me to want to go to college and get a good job when I grew up.
Q: What has working with 4CORE taught you that has changed something, if anything, in your everyday life?
A: It definitely has taught me a lot about building science. I, for instance, did a radon test on my house and found that it was 4 or 5 times the amount is recommended. I have made my home more energy efficient as well as overall awareness for me. The culture here is people who live and breathe being resource and energy efficient and in a lot of ways that's inspirational.
Q:What advice do you have for someone who is interested in starting a career in this field?
A: I would say definitely take advantage of all the free training out there. 4CORE offers a lot of free training and you just have to look around for those different possibilities, from job opportunities to attending expo's and getting internships, there's a lot of room in this field to come in knowing more than the average person might. It helps when it comes to learning the ropes on non-profits and how it works with funding and grants. You just need to be proactive with what you look for in training, the possibilities are endless.

Day 6: Monday, March 19th
The second week of my internship definitely has a slightly different feel than the first week. 4CORE is in the middle of a transition, and today was the first day that these changes have really taken affect. Employees have gone down from 13 to 9, and we are starting to move desks and supplies from the second office into the first office. This other room will soon seat everyone versus being split up into two separate rooms. About an hour into my day there was an office meeting that lasted all the way into lunch regarding the transition and the list of to-do's. After lunch I jumped into creating a survey from one Gregg had typed up for Fridays meeting with 4CORE's partners. I also input all of the information from the filled-out surveys on Friday, and with that made some simple graphs from the feedback. Rachael then came to visit 4CORE for a few minutes and check-in! As the day is pretty horrible outside... this was a slight "adventure" for her to get here. Teresa and I plan on doing the Mentor Interview tomorrow sometime during the move so that I can get that onto my DP LINK page as well as my LINK blog. My internship is still going smoothly despite all of the office changes occurring this week. Tomorrow I will work more on the Information HUB which I am still considering to be the larger of my projects to complete, as well as working with Teresa and Gregg to complete the Home Rx program format. I have been able to stay on task for the remainder of the day and try to get as much work as possible done as to have more time to help the office move tomorrow. (I have a feeling it will be a little hectic...)

Day 5: Friday, March 16th
For the beginning of my day I worked with Adobe Illustrator and InDesign (tutorials and portfolios) to help me become more familiar... At about 11:30 Ryan, the other 4CORE intern, and I went to pick up drinks and lunch for a meeting with the 4CORE state holders and board members. This meeting also featured the infographics that I created over the past couple of days, which Teresa said were a hit! Not staying for the actual meeting, but just to set up, we got back around 12:30. In the afternoon I worked mainly by myself working on a new project- the information hub. The information hub is what I was considering to be one of my bigger projects. It is set up like a spider web-graph, (4CORE's logo) that will be filled with information, success stories, and pictures. This weekend I will try to get a hold of 4CORE's photographer to get access to some pictures, and then I will be able to start compiling the media. I think that if I work on this "hub" at least for half an hour everyday, or more it will take me for the rest of my internship to complete. Some other things that I will be able to start working on are compiling the surveys taken from the meeting today into some graphs, as well as transferring it into a Google Form so it can be sent off to other people to take as well.

Day 4: Thursday, March 15th
Today was a really satisfying day as an intern. Although I mostly stayed in the office and worked on the computer, I think I got a substantial amount of work done.
4CORE is working to complete their annual report for 2011. This report consists of statistics of progress over the previous year as well as to date. There are graphs with descriptions, all of which I completed today. These graphs I tried to make different this year by making them be more aesthetically pleasing and easy to follow. (Not just all pie or bar graphs which is how it previously was). I also completed re-doing a document of 4CORE's. The original "step-up" diagram was a little overwhelmed with words and hard to follow, but by redoing it and adding a color aspect, Teresa, Gregg and Claire all "Ok-ed" the new one I made.
Teresa was able to make it in today, so I was able to work with her to get her input on changes to be made to my graphics for the annual report as well as the "step-up" diagram.
I feel good at where I am so far into my internship and my project ideas could change a lot to be more focused on my work with the annual report versus several small project.
Below are the graphs and new hand out I created.

Day 3: Wednesday, March 14th
After I was given some information on last year's stats, I was able to start compiling that information in to graphics for the 2011 annual report. Since my mentor, Teresa, was out today spending time with her young daughter I spent most of the day working on my own on my assigned tasks. I spent most of the morning experimenting with different possibilities, but ended up downloading Adobe Photoshop onto my laptop in order to create better graphics. The type of thing I'm trying to do is commonly referred to as "infographics." I have never really worked with infographics before and because of this I was having some difficulty on how to convey their information to the public in an interesting way. After Photoshop finally downloaded I was able to jump into this assignment which I will work to try to finish tomorrow morning. Now that I'm on a good path with it I don't think that it will take all too long. For lunch I was able to visit Sara Martin, who is interning up at the college working with athletes and studying Physical Therapy with their main PT.

Day 2: Tuesday, March 13th
Today was pretty interesting. In the morning I spent the first half of the day completing a form that I had starting re-doing yesterday, and sent that to my mentor. After that, I went down to the courthouse with Gregg Dubit and Amanda Saunders to sit in on a County Commissioner Meeting regarding the CEAP proposal. The CEAP document (Climate Energy Action Plan) discusses a series of recommended action plans for the county. After hours of locals speaking for and against the document, and commissioners speaking their piece, it was motioned that CEAP was not accepted. CEAP was partially constructed by 4CORE when the county came to 4CORE and asked them to create this proposal in 2006. 4CORE and local volunteers worked together to construct this in over 10,000 hours. 4CORE primarily appeared at this open meeting in order to state that this was a document that was commissioned to them by officials, and that this meeting is about CEAP, not about 4CORE. Although this was slightly disappointing that CEAP did not pass, it was also a really cool experience to get to be in the county courthouse participating in a moderated caucus. For the remainder of the day I worked with familiarizing myself with Huddle, a website that my mentor and 4CORE actively uses, as well as tried to figure out how to use different "infographic" websites. Overall it was a very exciting day in which I was able to see just how active 4CORE is in the community.

Day 1: Monday, March 12th
Today was the first day of my LINK experience!
I arrived slightly later than I will on most days due to my orientation with my mentor starting at 10:00. My mentor at 4CORE is Teresa Shishim, the Project Director. Teresa and I for went over all of the necessary paperwork and documents I have to become familiar with in order to get the most out of my internship for the first few hours of the day. We also walked around the office and introduced me to the other employees at 4CORE, including Gregg Dubit, the Executive Director. (Who is also the uncle of one of my classmates at AHS).
For lunch I was able to eat off campus with 2 other students doing internships downtown, which was a first since Animas High School has a closed campus. After lunch Teresa got me situated at my temporary desk, and familiar with the networks at 4CORE. I then became a member of several different websites that 4CORE is part of, as well as got used to how those work.
A lot of what my small projects at 4CORE will consist of include having to digest and compile information to be more aesthetically pleasing and easy to read-over. I am actually almost done with re-doing one of 4CORE's current documents.
After sitting in on a meeting with Gregg, Teresa and other employees at 4CORE about current proposals, I packed up and went home for the day. For the remainder of the week I will be at 4CORE from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM. I have already stated all that I wish to accomplish and more on my DP address, if you wish to hear more about my project proposals as well as information about 4CORE, click on the link below.
